The Transition Unit curriculum supports students who have completed the academic requirements for graduation from their school district but require additional instruction in life skills to succeed in adult community placements and residential settings. Students learn real-world skills both in the classroom and through authentic community-based learning opportunities, promoting greater independence in their post-secondary lives.
The mission of the Gengras Center Transition Unit is to ensure that every student learns to the best of their ability while achieving the highest possible level of independence. This is accomplished through interdisciplinary instruction aligned with individualized curricular goals and standards.
The overarching goal is to foster continuous growth in independence, self-confidence, and self-esteem, while supporting students—and their families—as they transition from school to appropriate adult services and community agencies. The Transition Unit emphasizes collaboration among students, families, educators, and community partners, reflecting the strong, supportive “family” atmosphere that has long defined the Gengras Center.
Key Program Components:
- Functional Academics – Practical instruction in literacy, math, and daily living concepts
- Vocational Training – On-campus and community-based job experiences to build work readiness
- Social Skills Development – Direct instruction and practice in communication, relationships, and self-advocacy
- Independent Living Skills – Life Skills Lab, daily routines, and real-world community experiences
- Physical Fitness & Nutrition – Health and wellness activities tailored to individual needs
- Art & Music – Creative expression and exploration through structured arts programming
- Related Services – Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), and Speech/Language services, as needed
- Family & Interagency Collaboration – Ongoing communication and planning with families and adult service agencies
