Each class begins with a steady beat as we sing a warm hello to our friends. We incorporate movement activities using scarves, parachutes, ribbons, and balls to make music an active and sensory-rich experience.
Students explore music through color-coded songs played on boomwhackers, bells, soundbellows, keyboards, and chimes. We also use adaptive instruments, including switch-activated devices and table-top electronic drum sets, ensuring that every student can participate fully. Our newest addition, the Tinkertar—a one-string guitar—allows students to strum along with songs in an accessible way.
To support communication and emotional growth, we integrate core words of the month into our music lessons, reinforcing classroom and speech therapy goals. Social-emotional learning (SEL) is a key component of our curriculum, and we use music to explore feelings and coping strategies through the Zones of Regulation framework.
Throughout the year, our students showcase their talents in exciting events like the Holiday Show, Talent Show, and Music & Arts Night. For those who love to sing, we offer a school chorus, and our Drums Alive program combines movement and drumming for a dynamic musical experience.
