WEST HARTFORD, Connecticut — The Gengras Center at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) will celebrate the ribbon-cutting for “Cal’s Place,” its new, modern, fully-accessible playground on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m., on the USJ-Gengras campus, 1678 Asylum Avenue.
The media is invited to the event, which will include a tour of Cal’s Place and an explanation of the playground’s innovative features.
Named for Father Joseph “Cal” Gengras, a member of the philanthropic family that made the Gengras Center possible, Cal’s Place is designed to foster cognitive, social, and physical development for children of all ages and abilities.
Cal’s Place’s distinctive features include sensory activity panels throughout; a fitness area for students of all ages and abilities; and a new poured-in-place surface to enhance accessibility for students with mobility issues.
The unveiling of Cal’s Place comes as the Gengras Center celebrates 60 years of service to the community, providing state-approved, private education for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, and related behavioral challenges.
We have goals for our students in the areas of fitness, social/emotional wellbeing, communication, and leisure skills. A continuous play environment will help us work towards those goals and the students will actively learn while having fun.
