C-214: Mrs. Chiara

The students of C-214 are working on academic skills which include chemistry, math, reading, writing, civics, and Spanish. Classroom learning approaches consist of whole group, small group, and individual lessons; hands-on experimentation; and the integration of technology including SMARTboards, computers, and iPads. Students engage in giving presentations that include the use of PowerPoint and public speaking. Presentation topics this year have included biographies of influential Latin Americans, the celebration of Dia de Los Muertos, and superheroes.

Students participate in classes that promote social skills, cooperation, independence, nutrition, and food safety. Each week our class collaborates with several other classrooms to cook and enjoy family-style meals such as Italian parmesan pasta, taco salad, and Mexican lasagna. Vocational opportunities for C-214 are diverse and range from working in the CARE building to working on the USJ university campus. Independence is fostered as students practice following verbal and written task lists typical to community jobs.
